INDIANAPOLIS (SMU/NCAA) – SMU graduates Morgan Bolton and Sylvia de Toledo have been nominated for the 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year award after completing their senior seasons on the Hilltop.
Bolton was a three-year starter at point guard for the Mustangs. As a senior, she led the team to the WNIT Round of 16 with postseason wins against Louisiana Tech and Abilene Christian before losing at Indiana. She had a team-high 84 assists while averaging 6.0 points per game during SMU's 19-win season. Bolton graduated in May of 2016 with a degree from SMU in biological sciences, and is currently pursuing a master's degree in management.
As a four-year starter for the equestrian team, de Toledo finished her career with a program-best 70 career wins, and ranks second on the SMU All-time Most Outstanding Player (MOP) list with 14. The Mustang standout earned five National Collegiate Equestrian Association (NCEA) All-America honors, including four consecutive Equitation Over Fences nods. de Toledo is a three-time NCEA Academic All-America First Team honoree. The finance major and economics minor graduated in May with Summa Cum Laude honors.
In its 27th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female collegiate student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
NCAA Woman of the Year nominees are submitted each year by member schools. Conferences will select up to two conference nominees apiece from the pool of school nominees and, from there, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top 30 honorees, 10 from each division. Nine finalists from that list will be announced in September with the winner announced on Oct. 22 in Indianapolis.
