Elizabeth Murphy Joins Track and Field Coaching Staff

Nov. 19, 2015

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU women's track and field staff is adding former Mustang Elizabeth Murphy as an assistant coach for throws. This will be Murphy's first step into coaching after competing as a thrower as a graduate student at SMU and three years prior at Division II Grand Valley State University.

"It feels so good to be back. To be able to give back to the university that gave me so much is truly rewarding," Murphy said. "I plan to continue the traditions at SMU, I'm excited to lead and encourage young women, not only to be the best athletes they can be, but to be the best women they can be."

Murphy returns to the Hilltop after competing in the Weight Throw and Hammer Throw for SMU in 2012-13, winning the Conference USA Outdoor Championship in the Hammer Throw and coming in third place at the C-USA Indoor Championships in the Weight Throw. Those results along with a 16th place finish at the NCAA Championships earned her All-American status in her only year at SMU.

"I have a strong passion for throwing and for the athletes," Murphy said. "I am always learning, improving myself and my coaching to provide the most effective way to lead and coach these young ladies."

Prior to her time at SMU, Murphy was a two-time Hammer Throw National Champion and six-time All-American at the Division II level while at Grand Valley State. She also holds the record at the D-II level in the Weight Throw for indoor track and field.

This addition finalizes Cathy Casey's coaching staff in her first year taking over head track and field duties for Dave Wollman who stepped down at the end of last season.
