DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Lettermen's Association will host its annual Lettermen's Reunion BBQ on Friday, Sept. 4. This year's honored teams will be the 1989 football and 1999 women's basketball teams.
The 1989 football squad reestablished SMU football following a two-year hiatus, and the team's first victory was quickly dubbed the "Miracle on Mockingbird." The 1998-1999 women's basketball team achieved a first for the program by bringing home its first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) tournament championship.
The Reunion Dinner kicks off at 7 p.m., and the program begins at 8 p.m. In addition to honoring both teams, the Lettermen's Association will also present its Honorary Letter Awards to two faithful supporters and former SMU cheerleaders. Paul Layne, a diehard fan who has not missed a home or away football game in 37 years, and Richard Ware, Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, SMU Trustee and longtime supporter of SMU Athletics, will be honored this year.
On Saturday, the two honored teams will have a special game day celebration in the Hall of Champions and will be recognized during the Mustangs' home opener against Stephen F. Austin.
