Nov. 19, 2013
NEW ORLEANS, La. (USTFCCCA) – Sophomore Shanoah Souza and freshmen Tova Magnusson and Agnes Sjöström were named USTFCCCA All-Region selections. The trio paced No. 29 SMU to a second place finish at the South Central Regional Championship, helping the Mustangs advance to the NCAA Championship meet for the first time since 2009.
In addition, Magnusson and Sjöström earned All-American Athletic Conference honors for their second and fourth place finishes at the inaugural American Championships. The duo led SMU to its fifth conference crown in the last six years (2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013) and third straight. The previous four conference titles came in Conference USA.
Magnusson has had an outstanding freshman season as she paced the Mustangs in perhaps the two most important meets of the season. The freshman finished 12th at the aforementioned South Central Regionals and second at The American Championship. In addition, Magnusson placed second of 53 total runners at the North Texas Invitational and fourth at the Baylor Invitational in the first collegiate race of her career.
Sjöström finished 21st at the South Central Regionals and fourth The American Championship. The freshman recorded her best finish in the first collegiate race of her career at the Baylor Invitational as she placed third of 89 total runners. Her efforts at Baylor earned her the first American Athlete of the Week award.
Souza finished 23rd at the Regionals and earned her second All-Region individual honor. A season ago, Souza placed 11th at the South Central Regionals to garner the selection. In addition, as a freshman she earned second team All-Conference USA honors for placing 10th at the Championship. The sophomore recorded her best finish this season at the UTA Invitational where she placed second of 48 total runners, leading the Mustangs to a team victory.
SMU concludes its season at the NCAA Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 12 p.m. CT.
The Mustangs ran once already on this terrain when the team competed at the Indiana State Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 19. At the meet, SMU placed 18th out of 49 schools and defeated No. 19 Oklahoma State as it finished in 20th place. Souza led the Mustangs as she finished 84th (21:20.0) overall out of 340 total runners in the 6K race.
