NEW ORLEANS, La. (USTFCCCA) -- The SMU cross country team is ranked fourth in the latest US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Central Region poll. The Mustangs are coming off an 18th place finish at the ISU Pre-National Invitational where they defeated USTFCCCA No. 19 ranked Oklahoma State, as it finished in 20th place, on Oct. 19.
The Mustangs have been led by performances from the team's underclassmen as the team's top five finishers at the ISU Pre-Nationals were freshmen and sophomores. Sophomore Shanoah Souza paced the Mustangs as she placed 84th of 340 total runners in the 6K race.
In addition to Souza, sophomore Karoline Skatteboe (98th), freshmen Tova Magnusson (139th) and Agnes Sjöström (145th) and sophomore Holly Archer (157th) all finished in the top 160 helping SMU to its top 20 team finish.
The Mustangs' lone senior, Caitlin Keen, has provided leadership for the team as well as great finishes in each of her five meets. Her best finish came five weeks ago at the UTA Invitational where she placed sixth.
Rounding out the top three in the south central region are Arkansas, Texas and Texas A&M.
SMU is idle until the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championships in Madison, Conn. on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 10 a.m.
