NEW ORLEANS, La. (USTFCCCA) -- The SMU cross country team is ranked fourth in the latest US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Central Region poll. The Mustangs are coming off an eighth place finish at the Notre Dame Invitational where they defeated then USTFCCCA No. 4 ranked Duke and regional foe Baylor as each team finished in 10th and 14th, respectively on Oct. 4.
The Mustangs have been led by performances from the team's underclassmen as the team's top six finishers at Notre Dame were freshmen and sophomores. Sophomore Melanie Stemper paced the Mustangs as she placed 42nd of 198 total runners in the 5K race.
In addition to Stemper, sophomores Karoline Skatteboe (57th), Shanoah Souza (62nd) and Holly Archer (64th) and freshmen Tova Magnusson (55th) and Agnes Sjöström (67th) all finished in the top 70 helping SMU to its top 10 team finish.
The Mustangs' lone senior Caitlin Keen has provided leadership for the team as well as great finishes in each of the four meets. Her best finish came three weeks ago at the UTA Invitational where she placed sixth.
Rounding out the top three in the South Central Region are Arkansas, Texas and Texas A&M.
SMU is idle until the Indiana State University Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m.
