Oct. 3, 2013
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (SMU) - Following back-to-back first place finishes at the UTA Gerald Richey Invite and North Texas Invitational the SMU cross country team prepares to run in the 58th annual Notre Dame Invitational on Friday afternoon in South Bend, Ind.
The race is scheduled to be run at the Notre Dame Golf Course as it features a 5K course.
The Mustangs look to the team's youth as two freshmen and two sophomores earned places second through fifth at North Texas a week ago. The group included freshmen Tova Magnusson and Agnes Sjöström finishing second and fifth and sophomores Shanoah Souza and Holly Archer earning third and fourth place.
In addition, look for sophomore Melanie Stemper and Souza to continue their stellar performances they have had this season. The duo recorded its best finishes of first and second at the UTA Invite on Sept. 14.
Sophomore Karoline Skatteboe has not competed since the opening meet at the Baylor Invitational where she finished sixth. Although she hasn't competed, Skatteboe has been training hard and makes her return on Friday as she will look to help SMU claim its third team title in four races this season.
The Mustangs lone senior, Caitlin Keen, has provided leadership for the team as well as great finishes in each of the three meets. Her best finish came on Sept. 14 at UTA where she placed sixth.
Sjöström is the lone award winner for the Mustangs thus far as she earned the first American Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honor following her third place finish at Baylor.
Following the meet at Notre Dame, SMU is idle until it travels to Terre Haute, Ind. for the Indiana State University Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 19.
