PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) -- SMU freshman Agnes Sjöström has been selected as the American Athletic Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week for her efforts in helping the Mustangs finish second out of eight schools at the Bear Twilight Invitational on Friday, August 30.
Sjöström garnered her first weekly honor as she finished third out of 89 runners with a time of 13:49.60. In her first collegiate meet, Sjöström led her team past six schools including No. 27 Texas, narrowly missing meet-winner Baylor by five points.
"This was a really good start to Agnes' season. Given the heat this past Friday, I was very happy with how she started the race. Agnes worked really hard this past summer and I'm glad to see that paying off," said Coach Cathy Casey.
Prior to SMU, Sjöström attended Ollvigymnasiet in Köping, Sweden where she was named its top cross country runner in 2012. Sjöström has competed for the 1K Westmannia club, earning top runner honors in 2008 and 2009 and best performance recognition in 2010 and 2012. She also competed in the Nordic Championships in 2012 and the 2013 European Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
After sitting idle this weekend, Sjöström and the Mustangs will be back in action on Sept. 14 when they compete in the University of Texas-Arlington Invitational. SMU looks to duplicate its success from a year ago when it tied for first at this meet.
