FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) - SMU Mustangs senior Mary Alenbratt placed eighth at the NCAA South Central Regionals with a 21:14.0, qualifying her for the NCAA Championships on Nov. 17, pending an official invitation from the NCAA.
The top-two teams and the four best individuals all qualify for the NCAA Championships, and Alenbratt was the fourth-highest finishing individual, crossing the line in 21:14.0.
The Mustangs placed fourth in the 6K event, and landed four runners on the All-Region team. Alenbratt (eighth), Shanoah Souza (11th), Ashlee Powers (17th) and Caitlin Keen (21st) all earned the honor.
Alenbratt led the way for the Mustangs from the very beginning, and has been consistently solid throughout the season.
"She has been getting stronger and stronger every race," Coach Cathy Casey said. "Nationals will be an exciting way for her to cap off her senior cross country season."
Souza and Powers were the top-two placing freshman at the meet, with both runners posting personal bests for 6K. Souza finished in 21:20.2 and Powers crossed the line at 21:35.8. Keen also notched a personal best of 21:41.7.
Marielle Hall of Texas won the individual race with a 20:30:7 and teammate Sara Sutherland finished at a close second with 20:35:3. Hosts Arkansas took the team victory with three runners in the top 10. The Razorbacks and second-place Longhorns each earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.
