FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs cross country squad ran an impressive 6K race at the Chile Pepper Invitational on Saturday morning, finishing third in a strong field of 43 teams, including three other Conference USA schools.
SMU has now finished in the top-three in four of its five events this season. The Mustangs are currently third in the most recent USTFCCCA South Central Regional Rankings.
Senior Mary Alenbratt led the way for SMU, posting a time of 21:14.4, good for 11th place overall. In an event with 341 total competitors, each of SMU's top-five runners finished in the top-60. One of SMU's many fabulous freshmen, Karoline Skatteboe, finished 24th with a 21:57.9. Junior Caitlin Keen set a new personal best in a 6K with a time of 22:06.5.
Jess Engel of Oklahoma won the individual title with a 20:42.1. Hosts Arkansas took the team victory with Oklahoma State following in second. SMU was third, with LSU and Loyola Marymount rounding out the top-five.
The Chile Pepper Invite was the last meet for SMU before it prepares for the Conference USA Championships on Oct. 29. The Mustangs have won three of the last four C-USA Championships.
