DALLAS (SMU) - Senior Maddie Lozano, junior Caroline Young and sophomore Avery Acker have been selected by their teammates to serve as team captains this season, head coach Lisa Seifert announced Wednesday.
"I'm proud of the team for knowing what we need from our captains," Seifert said. "I think the three of them will provide a good balance in leading our team through the adversity that can occur within a season. I trust that the three of them will continue to work hard in the gym and to execute what they know to be right both on and off the court."
Lozano led the team in blocks last season, recording 132, which ranks eight in a season at SMU. The transfer from Arizona played in 116 of 117 sets, and was second on the team with 238 kills. Young earned All-America honorable mention as a sophomore after leading the team with 397 kills and setting a school record with 51 aces, tied for 12th in the NCAA.
Acker fill multiple roles during her freshman campaign last season. An injury during the preseason scrimmage put her in the starting setter role for the first three matches. She averaged 9.0 assists per set over the first tournament, including a 35-assist performance in a three-set match to start the season. She also spent time as a libero and an outside hitter, finishing the year with 227 assists, 170 digs, 27 kills and 11 blocks.
The Mustangs start the season Friday against Quinnipiac in the Texas State Classic at 1:30 p.m. SMU plays its first home matches Sept. 6 and 7 in the SMU Classic, starting with Grambling Sept. 6 at 12:30 p.m.
