PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU) - The Mustangs were voted as the preseason favorite to win the American Athletic Conference, receiving nine of 11 first place votes by the league's coaches. SMU went 22-9 in 2013, including a 14-4 mark in The American.

SMU returns nine letterwinners from that 2013 squad, including four members of the preseason all-conference team: 2013 Setter of the Year Avery Acker, Cailin Bula, Janelle Giordano and Caroline Young, who was a unanimous selection. Young was The American's Player of the Week four times a year ago.

SMU, which won 10 of its last 11 matches, had a total of five All-American Athletic Conference selections, with Young and Giordano joining Acker on the first team. Bula and Abbey Bybel were selected to the second team.

The Mustangs start the season Aug. 29 at San Francisco in the first of three matches in the San Francisco Invite. SMU will host Georgia Tech in its first home match Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs will also host Texas Southern and Oklahoma Sept. 6 on the second day of the SMU Doubletree Invite.
