Six Student-Athletes To Represent SMU At USA Volleyball Tryouts

DALLAS (SMU) - Caroline Young, Abbey Bybel, Cailin Bula, Janelle Giordano, Morgan Heise and Kristen Stehling will represent SMU at the U.S. Women's National Team open tryout Friday-Sunday. The student-athletes will be competing at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., for a spot on the U.S. Women's National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team.
The group, which includes four starters and the starting libero in Heise, led the Mustangs to a second-place finish in the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference and posted a 22-9 record overall. Giordano, Heise and Stehling were all freshmen in 2013, while Young will be a senior and Bybel and Bula will be juniors during the 2014 season. Young and Giordano were both first team all-conference selections, the third straight all-conference award for Young, while Bybel and Bula were named to the second team.
Young finished the season second in the The American with 3.51 kills per set in conference matches, and had at least 10 kills in 23 matches. Bula led the conference in aces last season, finishing with 29 on the season, and Bybel was second on the team with 268 kills. Giordano led the team and was sixth in the conference with a .308 attack percentage during her first collegiate season. She also had 113 blocks, eighth in the league. Heise recorded 406 digs and 111 assists as a freshman, and Stehling had 104 kills and 47 digs during her first collegiate season.
