NORMAN, Okla. (SMU) - Four Mustangs had at least 10 kills, led by Caroline Young's 20, in a thrilling five-set victory (25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 17-15) over Arkansas-Little Rock in the last match before starting Conference USA action at Tulsa Wednesday.
The Mustangs overcame a five-point deficit in the fifth set, scoring seven-straight points to take a 10-8 lead in the decisive set. Young had four kills and a block during the run to give SMU the lead. The Mustangs never trailed again, taking the set 17-15 to win the match.
SMU took the first and third sets, holding off the Trojans to maintain control of the match. The Mustangs trailed 21-19 in the third set, but freshman Cailin Bula scored two kills as SMU outscored UALR 6-2 for the win and a 2-1 lead in the match. The fourth set was tied 20-20, but it was the Trojans who took a 25-22 victory to send the match to a fifth set.
Courtney Manning had 16 kills, and freshman Abbey Bybel scored 15 kills with seven digs. Bula finished with 13 kills and nine digs. Olivia Bailey recorded her second double-double of the season with 31 assists and 20 digs. Avery Acker also had 33 assists, and Susan Lewis posted a career-high 29 digs.
SMU went 1-1 for the day, falling 3-0 to New Mexico in the first match of the day. The Mustangs (3-9) play at Tulsa Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Conference USA opener. SMU returns home on Friday to host East Carolina in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m.
