DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU volleyball team needed just three sets to beat Lamar Saturday in Moody Coliseum, taking their second match of the Doubletree Classic 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-16).
In the third set, Lamar (1-4) matched the Mustangs (2-4) point for point early on, attempting to extend the match, but the Mustangs broke a 10-10 tie with five-straight points to break it open and never looked back. SMU went on to out-score the Lady Cardinals 10-6 down the stretch to close out the match with a 25-16 set win.
SMU survived a scare in the first set, coming from behind to take an early lead in the match. After SMU started with a 10-7 lead, Lamar battled back to take a 19-17 lead. The Mustangs fought right back, scoring the next four points and never trailed again, winning the set 25-22.
The Mustangs never let Lamar get close in the second set, jumping out to a 9-4 lead. SMU continued to stretch the lead, eventually winning 25-17 to go up two sets heading into the locker room.
SMU finished the game with 39 kills, 40 digs, and five blocks, led by Caroline Daly who blocked four attacks. The Mustangs will wrap up competition in the Doubletree Classic against Alabama tonight at 7 p.m.
