SMU Earns USTFCCCA Academic Honors

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Track and Field team was recognized for their academic excellence by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). SMU received the team scholar award and four individuals were given all-academic honors.

Teams were eligible for academic honors if they held a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher. Individuals were eligible by boasting a GPA of 3.25 or higher and by ranking in either the top 96 nationally of an individual event (indoor), top 48 of a relay event (indoor) or by participating in any round of the NCAA Division I Championship, including preliminaries (outdoor).

Helena Perez, who finished with a 3.57 GPA, earned all-conference honors in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, winning the hammer throw title in the outdoor event and earning third-place finishes in shot put in both seasons. Perez also took 18th at the NCAA Preliminaries in the hammer throw.

Lisa Egarter ended the year with a 3.47 GPA after advancing to the NCAA Preliminaries in the high jump. She took fifth in the heptathlon at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships and fourth in the high jump in the indoor league championship. Egarter also won the high jump at the TCU Horned Frog Invitational.

Agnes Sjöström closed her freshman season with a 3.46 GPA. Sjöström won the 5,000-meter run at the AAC Outdoor Championships and second at the 1,500-meter run. She also took second in the 3,000-meter run and third in the 5,000-meter run at the AAC Indoor Championships. Sjöström fought the flu at the NCAA Preliminaries and placed 22nd out of 48 runners in the 5,000-meter run.

Tova Magnusson, who holds a 3.26 GPA in Pre-Med, took 12th at the NCAA Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase after winning the event at the AAC Outdoor Championships. For her efforts, Magnusson received Second Team All-America honors.



The Mustangs had a historic 2014 season, winning their first two conference championships in program history. SMU swept the indoor and outdoor AAC titles while the cross country team added a league championship in the fall.
