Four Mustangs Headed to NCAA Midwest Track and Field Regional

DALLAS (SMU) - Four members of the SMU track and field squad are heading to Norman, Okla., to compete in the NCAA Midwest Track and Field Regional, May 27-28. They include senior Karin van Rooyen and sophomores Andrea Kvetova, Gaelle Niare, and Alesha Stegemoller.

Student-athletes qualified for the regional championships by reaching the standards established for each event or by earning automatic access as a conference event champion.

van Rooyen will compete in the 5,000-meter run set for Friday evening. The native of Ermelo, South Africa, has already qualified for nationals in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 33:39.07 - the eighth best time in the nation. On Saturday, Kvetova will compete in the javelin throw and posts the ninth-best regional mark with a distance of 48.44 meters. Niare and Stegemoller each posted a mark of 1.78 meters in the high jump at the WAC Championships, qualifying them for the Regionals.

Qualifiers from the four regional sites will participate in the NCAA Track and Field Championships will be held June 8-11 at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif.
