PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/American) - Following her record-setting performance at the TCU Horned Frog Invitational, junior sprinter Stephanie Kalu has been named the indoor track & field Athlete of the Week, the American Athletic Conference announced Tuesday. The honor is the third of her career. The TCU Invite was the first outdoor meet of the season for the Mustangs.
Competing against a strong field in Fort Worth, Texas, Kalu took first place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.15 seconds. Her time not only broke her own SMU record, but ranks her first in The American in that event. In addition, Kalu set a personal-best time, holds the SMU school record and ranks first in the AAC as well in the 200-meter dash as the junior placed second with a time of 23.21 seconds.
“I am real proud of her,” Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said. “Any time that you can win an award like this, it’s a good thing. I’m glad we got to go back to work just one week after the NCAA’s, our main goal right now is to continue training and getting stronger for the conference outdoor that is just over a month away.”
This winter, Kalu was named a USTFCCCA second team All-America selection following her ninth place (7.31 seconds) finish in the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter dash. Kalu qualified for the Championships in the prelims of the American Athletic Conference Championships with a time of 7.28 seconds. At The American Championships, she earned SMU's second individual title when she placed first in the 60-meter dash finals in 7.31 seconds.
In addition, the junior also earned two AAC Athlete of the Week awards in consecutive weeks with the second coming on Feb. 4. She earned the honors following her outstanding performances at the Vanderbilt Indoor Invitational and the Masked Rider Invitational in Lubbock, Texas.
Last spring as a sophomore, Kalu earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 100-meter dash as she placed 22nd on day one of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Kalu and the Mustangs are back in action this week beginning tomorrow, March 26 as they travel to Austin, Texas to compete at the Texas Relays. The relays conclude on Saturday, March, 29.
