PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/American) - Following her outstanding performance at the Iowa State Classic, junior thrower Rayann Chin has been named the indoor track & field Athlete of the Week, the American Athletic Conference announced Tuesday. The honor is the first of her career and SMU's third this season.

Competing against a strong field in Ames, Iowa, Chin took first place in the weight throw with a mark of 20.82 meters. That mark now ranks her first in The American, tied for 14th in the nation and second all-time at SMU in that event. In addition, Chin placed fourth in the shot put with a distance of 14.92m.

"Rayann is an elite athlete and for the first time in her career I think she recognizes that," Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said. "She and I both think that this is just the start and that she will continue to improve. We are all very excited moving forward."

Prior to the Iowa State Classic, Chin was coming off her best performance of the indoor season as she led the SMU throwers at the Red Raider Invitational where she placed first in the weight throw (19.81m) and second in the shot put (14.36m).

Chin and the Mustangs are idle this weekend but return to action on Feb. 28 – March 1 as the team travels to New York City, N.Y. to compete in the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championships, where SMU looks to capture the program’s first indoor conference championship.

“This past weekend was all about finding out where every individual is at mentally and physically,” Wollman said. “Now we know what to improve upon heading into the conference meet which is all about the team and each individual contributing to our team’s effort. We are looking forward to next week.”
