Feb. 4, 2014
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/American) - SMU junior sprinter Stephanie Kalu was named today (Tuesday, February 4, 2014) as American Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week. Kalu earned this award for finishing first in the 55-meter dash, breaking her own school record for the second-straight week with a time of 6.75 (which converts to 7.29 in the 60-meter dash). That 60-meter time ranks her seventh nationally and first in The American at the Masked Rider Invitational.
"This is great," Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said upon hearing the news. "Stephanie ran her best time in her third race of the day this past weekend, which shows how strong she is. The explosive aspect of her training is really paying off."
Kalu won her first weekly honor when he paced the Mustangs at the Vanderbilt Indoor Invitational on January 25. At that meet, Kalu took first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.34 seconds and placed 13th in the 200-meter in 24.92.
Prior to the Vanderbilt Indoor Invite, Kalu finished third in the 60-meter dash (7.47) and 14th (24.66) in the 200-meter dash in the opening meet of the 2014 season for SMU at the Texas A&M Invite. SMU placed third of 10 schools at Texas A&M.
Kalu and the Mustangs are idle this weekend but return to action on Feb. 14-15 as the team travels to Ames, Iowa for the Iowa State Classic.
