PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/American) - Following her record-setting performance at the Vanderbilt Indoor Invitational, junior sprinter Stephanie Kalu has been named the indoor track & field Athlete of the Week, the American Athletic Conference announced Tuesday. The honor is the first of her career and SMU's first this season.
Competing against a strong field in Nashville, Tenn., Kalu took first place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.34 seconds. Her time not only broke her own SMU record, but ranks her first in The American and ninth in the nation in that event. In addition, Kalu placed 13th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.92.
"Stephanie has raised her game in every facet inside and out of practice," Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said. "She has become the consummate athlete and her results show that."
Prior to the Vanderbilt Indoor Invite, Kalu finished third in the 60-meter dash (7.47) and 14th (24.66) in the 200-meter dash in the opening meet of the 2014 season for Mustangs at the Texas A&M Invite. SMU placed third of 10 schools at Texas A&M.
Kalu and the Mustangs are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1 as they travel to Lubbock, Texas to compete at the Red Raider Invitational hosted by Texas Tech.
