NEW ORLEANS (SMU) - Through six events, the SMU track and field team is in second place heading into the final day of the Conference USA Championships. The Mustangs are four points back of Southern Miss.

SMU picked up 13 points in the shot put as Helena Perez, winner of the event at the C-USA Indoor Championships in February, won the event with a career-best toss of 15.82m. The sophomore topped the second-place finisher by 0.74m. Freshman Rayann Chin took sixth, recording a toss of 13.97m.

Kristine Eikrem-Engeset added an additional eight points to SMU's total as she finished second in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:47.50.

 Three Mustangs also qualified for spots tomorrow in event finals. Amber Evans clocked the fastest time in the 400m prelims with a time of 53.46, while also earning a spot in the 200m, finishing third in the prelims at 23.65. Craishia Washington also earned a spot in the 400m final with a time of 55.24. Mary Alenbratt moved on in the 1500m run as she qualified for the final after coming in at 4:42.10, while also qualifying in the 800m with a time of 2:12.32.
