NEW ORLEANS (SMU) - SMU throwers Ayla Gill and Helena Perez earned the Mustangs 11 points through two completed events as SMU sits in third place after day one at the 2012 Conference USA track and field Championships.
With third, fourth and fifth place finishes in the hammer throw at the C-USA Outdoor Championships, Gill took second place in the event in her final conference championship, finishing five-hundredths of a meter behind East Carolina's Kim Kanala. Her toss of 53.50m was second-furthest throw of the season.
To go with Gill's eight points, Perez added three points by taking sixth place in the hammer with a throw of 46.98m, her third-best toss of the season.
Rice currently leads the team competition with 19 points. Day two of the competition begins tomorrow morning with the conclusion of the heptathlon.
