DENTON, Texas (SMU) – Seniors Amber Evans and Ayla Gill led the SMU track and field team today at the North Texas Spring Classic, as both claimed top honors. As a team, the Mustangs came away with 10 top-10 finishes.
Evans earned her first gold of the spring in the 200 meters she came in with a time of 23.91. Meanwhile, Gill claimed the top spot in the hammer throw with a toss of 53.25m, a mark that came up just 0.01m shy of her top throw of the spring. It was her second win of the season.
Also in the hammer, Helena Perez took third with a personal-best throw of 49.80m, more than five meters further than best mark this season. Rayann Chin also set a personal best today as the freshman broke the 50-meter mark for the first time in the discus with a mark of 50.02m.
In the 1500 meters, SMU took second and third behind Kristine Eikrem-Engeset (4:32.75) and Kajsa Barr (4:40.14). Bria Guerin recorded a season-best time in the 800 meters, coming in at 2:16.04, while Maresha Carrie also had a season-best time in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.68).
The Mustangs earned a pair of top-4 results in the jumps as Valerie Lindenmuth took third in the high jump at 1.63m and Lisa Egarter was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 5.49m.
SMU will compete next at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut Hill, Calif., on April 18-21.
