Mustangs Compete At Texas Tech Open

LUBBOCK, Texas (SMU) - Senior Helena Perez led the SMU throwers as she placed first in both the shot put (15.62m) and the hammer throw (60.03m) and ninth in the discus (42.86m) as the SMU track & field team competed at the Texas Tech Open on Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. SMU recorded 12 top-5 finishes at the Open.
In addition to Perez, junior Rayann Chin placed second in both the discus (50.39m) and the hammer throw (51.95m) and third in the shot put (14.08m), while freshman Tochi Nlemchi finished second in the shot put with a distance of 14.52 meters and eighth in the discus with a mark of 45.10m.
In the distance events for SMU, the Mustangs were paced by senior Caitlin Keen as she won the 10,000-meter run in with a time 38:10.11. Freshman Julie Vanderhout placed seventh in the 1,500-meter run in 5:01.08. In the 5,000-meter run, the Mustangs had three top-10 finishes in the race and were led by sophomore Claire Trotter as she clocked a time of 19:02.92 to place fifth.
Sophomore multi-event athlete Lucija Cvitanovic continued her impressive spring as she notched two top-5 finishes with her best marks coming in the high jump (1.69 meters) and the javelin (49.15m) as she placed second in each event. Senior Lisa Egarter competed in multiple events at the Open but earned her best finish in the javelin with a throw of 38.72 meters to place third.
SMU is back in action in two weeks as the Mustangs spilt there team once again to compete in the Mt. Sac Relays (April 17-19) in Walnut, Calif., the Michael Johnson Invitational in Waco, Texas (April 19) and the Sooner Invitational (April 19) in Norman, Okla.
