AUSTIN, Texas (SMU) – SMU multi-event athlete Lucija Cvitanovic placed fifth (5,455 pts.) in the heptathlon following two top-five finishes on day two of the Texas Relays. The sophomore won the javelin with a mark of 48.26 meters (826 pts.) and finished fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:18.38 (846 pts.) which propelled her into fifth place overall. Cvitanovic also placed 14th in the long jump with a leap of 5.51 meters (703 pts.). Her score of 5,455 points is a personal-best score and ranks her third all-time at SMU.
“Lucija recorded a solid performance in all seven events,” Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said. “We came in with a goal of qualifying for the NCAA’s and with her score, I think she did that. There is still room for improvement in five of the seven events, but she performed well.”
The top-24 scores in the country qualify for the NCAA outdoor championships this spring.
Lisa Egarter was the only other competitor for SMU this week as she competed in the heptathlon as well. The senior placed 22nd in the long jump (5.25 meters, 628 pts.) on day two but did not compete the rest of the day as she retired from the meet due to injury.
Cvitanovic, Egarter are back in action next weekend as it splits its team between the Stanford Invitational (April 4-5) in Palo Alto, Calif. and the Texas Tech Open (April 5) in Lubbock, Texas.
