BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (SMU) – Sophomore thrower Helena Perez led SMU on the final day of competition at the 2012 Conference USA Indoor Championships, winning the shot put with a career-best toss of 15.20m, 0.41m further than her previous long set earlier this season.
Perez’s 10 points was the highest on the day for the Mustangs, while Craishia Washington earned nine total points. The freshman picked up four points after finishing fifth in the 400m with a time of 54.89, and the other five coming as a member of the Mustang 4x400 relay team with Isis Wilson, Amber Evans and Lakeisha James, which finished fourth, clocking in at 3:45.19, a new school record in the event.
In the distance events, Mary Alenbratt took third in the mile with a time of 4:48.89, just over five hundredths of a second behind Rice’s Becky Wade who won the race at 4:48.32. In the 3000m, Kristine Eikrem-Engeset took sixth with a time of 9:43.36.
East Carolina won the women’s team title with 123 points. SMU finished with 45 points. Alenbratt (mile, DMR) scored the most points individually for the Mustangs with 16, followed by James (4x400, DMR) with 15 and Eikrem-Engeset (3000m, DMR) with 13. All three, along with Kajsa Barr, were members of Saturday night’s record-breaking distance medley team that broke the C-USA Indoor Championships record of 11:37.32, by nearly five seconds, clocking in at 11:32.36.
