SMU Competes On Day One Of The Iowa State Classic
Feb. 14, 2014
AMES, Iowa (SMU) - Junior Rayann Chin placed first in the weight throw with a personal best mark of 20.82 meters as the SMU indoor track and field team continued its indoor season at the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa. Chin's mark in the weight throw now ranks her 12th in the NCAA and second all-time at SMU. The Mustangs are back in action tomorrow for day two of the Classic.
"Rayann was fantastic today," Director of Track & Field Dave Wollman said. "Her record setting performance is even more remarkable due to the fact that our training has been limited because of the bad weather in the DFW area. I am excited for her to compete at the Conference meet in two weeks."
In addition to Chin, senior Helena Perez placed eighth (18.09m) in the weight throw.
In the 5000-meter run, freshman Agnes Sjöström led the Mustang distance runners as she crossed the finish line in a time of 16:31.05 to place 14th. Sjöström's time gives her the top time in the American Athletic Conference and ranks her third all-time at SMU and 16th in the country.
"Agnes is very talented as she is just starting to round into shape," Wollman continued. "Before she leaves SMU, Agnes will hold many more records."
In the high jump, senior Lisa Egarter and sophomore Lucija Cvitanovic finished sixth (1.65m) and eighth (1.65m), respectively. In addition in the multi-events, Cvitanovic and junior Courtney Madden placed 15th (5.25m) and 16th (5.16m) in the long jump.
For the sprinters, juniors Stephanie Kalu and Craisha Washington placed fourth (24.40) and 10th (24.77), respectively as they led the SMU sprinters in the 200-yard dash.
"I am excited to see how our distance runners handle running a double (two races in the same day) tomorrow," Wollman said when asked what he is most looking forward too about day two of the Classic. "How they run tomorrow will show us what we need to improve upon heading toward The American Championships in two weeks."
Following the Iowa State Classic, SMU is idle next weekend but returns to action on Feb. 28 - Mar. 1 as the team travels to New York City, N.Y. for the inaugural American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships.
