DENTON, Texas (SMU) – After sitting idle for the past two weeks, the SMU women’s tennis team is back in action on Friday as it begins play at Metroplex Mania in Denton, Texas. Sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova has a 7-3 overall singles record through her first three tournaments of the fall season.

Bulgakova has advanced to at least the round of 16 at each of the three tournaments she has competed in this fall. Most recently at the ITA Texas Regional, Bulgakova won her first three matches that included a victory over No. 98 Kenna Kilgo, a junior from Texas Tech.

Sophomore Hristina Dishkova (4-4) comes off her best tournament of the fall as well, where she advanced to the consolation semifinals. To reach the consolation semifinals, Dishkova won three straight matches that began after an opening round setback to TCU senior Millie Nichols in three sets.

The first of her three straight wins came on day two of the Regional against UTSA sophomore Alena Shichkova. She then defeated Rice sophomore Solomiya Zinko and Texas freshman Pippa Horn.

In addition to Bulgakova and Dishkova, SMU has had strong performances from its youth. Freshman Macie Elliott (3-2) recorded her best tournament at the Colorado Invitational where she posted a 2-1 record and fell in the semifinals. Freshman Dasha Sharapova (3-2) had her best finish at the ITA Texas Regional where she finished with a similar 2-1 mark as she reached the round of 32.

Sophomore Yana Erkeeva (2-2) and freshman Anna Kate Anderson (1-3) have also competed for the Mustangs. These two look to have very successful tournaments at Metroplex Mania.

In doubles, head coach Kati Gyulai has tried many different combinations throughout each tournament. Overall the Mustang duos have combined for a record of 7-5. The combinations of Dishkova/Bulgakova and Elliott/Sharapova have each recorded records of 2-1.

Metroplex Mania begins on Friday, Nov. 1 and continues through Sunday, Nov. 3.
