FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. (SMU) - Marta Lesniak was named to the 2012 ITA Collegiate All-Star Team, the International Tennis Association announced at its ITA Awards Luncheon hosted by the United States Tennis Association on Saturday.
Lesniak joins Nicole Gibbs (Stanford) and Beatrice Capra (Duke) as the only Division I all-star honorees.
The Poland-native finished the season ranked second in the Campbell/ITA NCAA Division I singles rankings, after going 17-3 during the season. The highlight came when she won the USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championship with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against No. 26 Joanna Mather of Florida at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Lesniak won five matches in four days en route to the title. She topped four opponents ranked No. 26 or higher, including two ranked in the top five.
Lesniak finished at SMU with a career record of 102-18, good for third all-time in wins and second in winning percentage in school history. She becomes the first SMU player to receive a major performance-based national award since Jennifer Santrock won Volvo/ITCA Player of the Year in 1989.
The 29th ITA Collegiate All-Star Team includes the nation's top-ranked men's and women's players from the year-end Campbell/ITA College Tennis Rankings at the NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and NJCAA levels, as well as winners of the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and 2012 NCAA Division I Championships.
