Mustangs Finish 2012-13 Campaign 51st In The Nation

DALLAS (SMU) - The SMU Mustangs women's tennis team finished the season ranked seventh in the ITA Texas regional rankings to go along with their national ranking of 51st. The Mustangs experienced a strong 2012-2013 campaign, earning 14 wins with three Mustangs taking home all-conference honors.

SMU advanced to the semifinals of the C-USA Championships after sweeping UTEP and defeating No. 46 Tulane. The Mustangs were 7-2 at home and had four wins against nationally-ranked teams. After beating No. 63 UC Santa Barbara, SMU achieved its highest rank of the season at No. 48 on March 12. The team held a four-match win streak after beating Texas State, Sam Houston State, Air Force, and Northwestern state, moving on to win nine of eleven consecutive matches between Feb. 11 and March 22.

Senior Aleksandra Malyarchikova ended the year ranked No. 65 going 24-6 overall and 16-4 in the spring. She also went 6-3 against ranked opponents and earned First Team All-C-USA honors. Malyarchikova was also named C-USA Player of the Month in September and Player of the week on April 9. She finished 87-15 (.853) for her singles career, putting her sixth all-time in wins and second in winning percentage at SMU. Malyarchikova finished 10th in the ITA Texas region singles rankings.

Edyta Cieplucha was ranked as high as No. 94 in the ITA singles rankings this season, earning First Team All C-USA Honors alongside Malyarchikova. She went 23-15 while facing 11 ranked opponents. Her top singles win was a three-set victory against then-No. 12 Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama. She finished 79-35 (.693) in her career, which is tied for seventh in career victories and ranks 10th in winning percentage at SMU. In doubles, she was 26-11 including a 10-2 mark with Malyarchikova. Cieplucha wound up 20th in the ITA Texas region singles rankings.



Vaszilisza Bulgakova went 11-11 on the season with a 10-9 record at No. 3 singles and earning All-C-USA Third Team honors. She beat Jenny Hois of No. 50 Tulane on Feb. 1 and started the spring by winning her first three matches.

The senior-freshman duo of Aleksandra Malyarchikova and>Vaszilisza Bulgakova earned the No. 61 spot in the ITA rankings and went 9-7 in the No. 1 position. The duo had back-to-back wins against ranked opponents earning an 8-6 victory over No. 47 Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith of No. 35 TCU on April 3 and an 8-6 win over Rice's Natalie Beazant and Dominique Harmath on April 6.
