DALLAS (SMU) --- SMU Head Coach Kati Gyulai announced Maxine Schmidt has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Mustangs beginning with the 2014-15 season. Schmidt, a native of Frankfurt, Germany, is currently ranked in the top-100 in the German women’s open. She is the lone newcomer to the 2014-15 squad as the Mustangs plan to return its entire team from a season ago.
“Maxine is a multi-sport athlete, so to become a top-100 player in the German women’s open and not playing tennis full-time speaks volume about her potential,” Gyulai said. “She is a player who is hungry and her best tennis is ahead of her.”
Schmidt played her high school tennis for a club team, SaFo Frankfurt. They were club team champions in the state of Hessen U18 in 2011 and 2012. The team then finished runner-up at the Regionalliga Süd-West in 2013. This season, SaFo Frankfurt has advanced to the Bundesliga 2 with Schmidt competing in the No. 1 singles position.
Schmidt plans to major in Business and it is not just her in her family that is very involved in tennis. Schmidt’s younger sister, Zoe, is the No. 1 ranked U-14 player in Germany.
“Maxine adds versatility, competitiveness and leadership to our young group,” Gyulai said in closing. “We can’t wait to have her on campus this fall.”
