Scouting the Islanders:
Texas A&M Corpus Christi is 2-1 this season, sweeping a pair of matches against UMBC (6-0) and Prairie View (5-0) on Jan. 26 and Feb. 5. In between those two matches on Feb. 1, the Islanders fell to Southern Miss in a close match, 4-3. Three Islanders have unblemished records in singles play, led by a 3-0 mark by Celia Rodriguez at the No. 4 position. Kerry Galhos and Judit Vives have each recorded 2-0 records thus far. Texas A&M Corpus Christi has posted a combined 3-2 overall record this spring.
SMU and Texas A&M Corpus Christi last met on Feb. 2, 2009 when the Mustangs defeated the Islanders, 4-0. In that match, SMU dominated in singles play where the Ponies earned the four wins to take the overall match victory. The Mustangs will look to duplicate that success on Wednesday.
The Week That Was:
After sitting idle last week due to the match against Wichita State being postponed until March 30. SMU opened its season by defeating Stephen F. Austin (W, 6-1) but has since dropped three straight. Two of the three losses came to ranked opponents including No. 18 Texas Tech and No. 60 LSU.
SMU Ranked 64th in the ITA:
SMU finished last season ranked 51st in the ITA national rankings and begin this spring ranked 52nd following a highly competitive and successful fall season. Following a 1-3 mark this spring, the Mustangs have four matches in six days beginning on Wednesday giving SMU a chance to get back above .500.
Strength of Schedule:
SMU will play seven total teams that are ranked in the ITA. The Mustangs have also already played matches against No. 18 Texas Tech and No. 60 LSU. Next for SMU are matches against current T-No. 28 Tulsa and T-No. 33 Memphis.
