SMU Wins Six Matches On Day One Of The San Diego State Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (SMU) - Junior Holly Verner (4-0) remained perfect this fall as she defeated California State Northridge junior Corinne Schnyder, 6-2, 6-1, as the SMU women's tennis team competed on day one of the second annual San Diego State Classic. Seven Mustangs competed on day one of the Classic.
In addition to Verner, freshman Dasha Sharapova improved to 6-3 this fall as she defeated Washington sophomore Elianne Douglas-Miron, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1). She now faces San Diego State senior Laura Antonana in the semifinal of her singles bracket.
Sophomore Yana Erkeeva (5-3) beat UW senior Andjela Nemcevic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 in her opening round match. Her next opponent is Utah senior Lucia Kovarcikova. Freshman Anna Kate Anderson (3-4) defeated Loyala MaryMount freshman Julia Norlin, 6-0, 6-1. She now faces San Diego State junior Hailey Johnson in the semifinal of her singles bracket.
In doubles, SMU had a combined record of 2-1 as three different doubles combos paired up together for the fourth time in their careers.
Sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Sharapova improved to 4-0 together this fall as the duo defeated California State Northridge freshmen Kristen Poei and Mickey Hsu, 8-5. Dishkova and Verner also improved to a perfect 4-0 as the tandem defeated Washington junior Julija Lukac and senior Andjela Nemcevic, 8-5.
The San Diego State Classic continues on Saturday for day two in San Diego, Calif. The event concludes on Sunday, Nov. 10.
