Mustangs Go 9-0 On Final Day At Metroplex Mania

DENTON, Texas (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team won nine of nine matches on day three of Metroplex Mania. The Mustangs went a combined 3-0 in doubles matches for the third consecutive day.
"We had a strong finish on championship Sunday,” head coach Kati Gyulai said. “We played disciplined, handled adversity well and competed hard."
SMU won six of six singles matches that began with sophomore Hristina Dishkova winning her third match in as many days as she defeated UTA freshman Angeles de los Rios, 6-3, 6-2, to improve her overall record to 7-4 this fall.
In addition, freshman Dasha Sharapova and Macie Elliott each improved their overall records to 5-3. Sharapova defeated Maverick sophomore Elizabeth Thoms, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, while Elliott beat UTA freshman Ekatarina Tugarinova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Sophomore Yana Erkeeva defeated Maverick freshman Astrid Gehre, 7-6, 7-6, as she improved her overall record to 4-3.
Freshman Anna Kate Anderson earned her first win of the weekend as defeated UTA junior Giada D’Ortona, 5-7, 7-6, 6-1.
Junior Holly Verner improved to 3-0 as she defeated UTA Verena Scott, 6-3 in the first set before she retired in the second.
In doubles, three SMU duos won three matches for the third consecutive day to improve the Mustangs overall doubles record to 16-5 this fall. Each of these three pairs is now 3-0 when paired together.
Dishkova and junior Holly Verner defeated a duo from Tyler junior college , 8-6. Elliott and Erkeeva also defeated a tandem from UNT, freshmen Alexis Thoma and Ana Sofia Cordero, 8-6.
In addition, sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Sharapova defeated UNT sophomores Dane Joubert and Agustina Valenzuela, 8-3.
SMU splits its team next weekend between the USTA /ITA Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. beginning on Thursday, November 7, and the second annual San Diego State Classic beginning on Friday, Nov. 8 in San Diego, Calif.
