SMU Competes On Day Two Of The ITA Texas Regional

FORT WORTH, Texas (SMU) – The SMU women’s tennis team competed on day two of the ITA Texas Regional. Sophomore Hristina Dishkova advanced to the consolation round of 16 as she defeated UTA freshman Jessica Birowski in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1.

Dishkova (2-3) fell in the opening round of 128 to TCU senior Millie Nichols in three sets, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. With her win on Friday, Dishkova faces UTSA sophomore Alena Shichkova who defeated Sam Houston State freshman Isabella Costa, 6-4, 6-3 in the consolation round of 32.   

Sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova moved to 7-3 on the season after posting a 1-1 mark on Friday. In the round of 32, Bulgakova defeated No. 98 Kenna Kilgo, a junior Texas Tech, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. She then fell to Texas senior Elizabeth Begley in three sets by scores of, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6, in the round of 16.

Freshmen Dasha Sharapova (3-2) had a very successful day one at the Regionals as she defeated UTA freshman Ekaterina Tugarinova (6-2, 6-4) and Texas Tech freshman Lynn Kiro (6-3, 6-4) to reach the round of 32.

In that match, Sharapova fell to No. 49 Dominique Harmath of Rice, 6-4, 6-4.

"We showed improvement in many areas today," head coach Kati Gyulai said. "We handled adversity better, played tougher in key moments and used our problem solving skills." 

The ITA Texas Regional continues on Saturday for day three. The Regional concludes on Monday, Oct. 21. SMU next competes at Metroplex Mania in Denton, Texas on Nov. 1-3.

"Our execution needed to be more  precise when it mattered but we are on the right track to do so as the season progresses," Gyulai said.
