No. 34 Cieplucha And Fayner Win Singles Matches On Day One Of The Rice Invitational
Oct. 5, 2012
HOUSTON (SMU) --- The SMU Women's Tennis team had No. 34 Edyta Cieplucha and Elena Fayner advanced in singles at the Rice Invitational on Friday. Cieplucha then partnered with Heidi Stewart to advance in doubles.
Cieplucha and Fayner both won three-set matches. Cieplucha dropped the first set of her match in Flight 1 before rallying for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Anna Mamalat of Texas A&M. Fayner took the first set of her Flight 3 matchup with Ariel Morton of LSU, eventually winning 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.
"It doesn't get any better than having every team member fight through three-set matches," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We did not want to start the tournament any other way. Some didn't play at their best, but were able to raise their level to close out the matches. Some battled hard but collided with tough competition early on. Great day overall. We all are pleased with our performances and look to build on today's toughness."
In Flight 1 of doubles, Cieplucha and Stewart won 8-2 over Morton and Kaitlin Burns of LSU. Dishkova and Fayner also played in Flight 1, falling to a duo from Texas A&M 8-5.
The Mustangs also had Hristina Dishkova in Flight 1 of singles, falling in three sets to Klaudia Gawlik of McNeese State 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. Stewart represented SMU in Flight 2 of singles, also going three sets before falling to Kaitlin Burns of LSU 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
