Sept. 30, 2013
HILTON HEAD, S.C. (SMU) – Sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova defeated Mia Horvit in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2 in the round of 32. Freshman Anna Kate Anderson paired with Tulsa freshman Yelena Nemchen as they defeated Alexa Bortles and Kassie Tulenko in a qualifying doubles match. This was the first win of Anderson’s young career.
With the win, Bulgakova improves to 4-1 overall and faces the winner of the round of 16 match between Alessondra Parra and Kristin Wiley. Prior to losing a game in the second set, Bulgakova had won 21 straight games.
“Lisa put together a good match today,” assistant coach Jeff Hammond said. “After a great first set, she cooled off in the second but closed out the match in great fashion.”
Anderson and Nemchen next compete in the round of 16 where they will face Emma Hayman and Michelle Simmons.
“Anna Kate has officially won her first match as a Mustang,” Hammond said. “I am really happy for her.”
On day three of the tournament (Tuesday, Oct. 1), Bulgakova competes in her round of 16 singles match, while Anderson continues to compete in the doubles bracket.
