BOULDER, Colo. (SMU) – Freshman Macie Elliott fell in the semifinals of the singles bracket after winning her first two matches at the Colorado Invitational. Freshman Dasha Sharapova earned the first singles victory of her career as she rebounded from a loss yesterday.
In Elliott’s semifinal match, she fell to Denver sophomore Kathryn Hughes in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. Elliott finished the tournament with a 2-1 singles and doubles record, respectively. In her doubles matches, she was paired with Sharapova on their semifinal run on day one of the Invitational.
Sharapova defeated Colorado senior Winde Janssens in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. She finished the Invite with a 1-1 singles record to go along with her aforementioned 2-1 doubles record.
"Playing at 6000 feet is not an easy task,” head coach Kati Gyulai said. “I thought we used our problem solving skills, embraced the challenge and competed well.”
This weekend SMU split its team between the Colorado Invitational (Sept. 27-29) and the USTA Women’s 10K Tournament in Hilton Head, S.C., which begins today, Sunday, Sept. 29.
“We look to continue to get better as the season progresses," Gyulai said.
