BOULDER, Colo. (SMU) – Freshman Macie Elliott advanced to the semifinals of the singles bracket after winning her first two matches at the Colorado Invitational.

In the round of 16, Elliott competed in the first singles match of her career and defeated Denver junior Mandy van den Eerenbeemt in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.  She defeated Colorado senior Winde Janssens in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-0.

After winning the first set, 6-2, sophomore Yana Erkeeva was forced to retire from her match against Denver sophomore Kathryn Hughes due to injury. Freshman Dasha Sharapova also competed in the first singles match of her career as she fell to Arkansas sophomore Kimberley-Ann Surin, 6-3, 6-4.

"We had outstanding opening rounds in singles play,” head coach Kati Gyulai said. “Some played really well with the lead and we look to have a strong finish tomorrow on the final day of the tournament."

This weekend SMU splits its team between the Colorado Invitational (Sept. 27-29) and the USTA Women’s 10K Tournament in Hilton Head, S.C., which begins on Sunday, Sept. 29.
