AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. (SMU) - Sophomores Hristina Dishkova and Vaszilisza Bulgakova advanced to the round of 32 after they each won their first match in three sets at the Amelia Island 10K Championships. Freshman Anna Kate Anderson also competed for the Mustangs in the first collegiate match of her young career.
Bulgakova defeated Nicole Coopersmith (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) and faces Madeleine Kobelt in the round 32 who defeated her first opponent in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
"Lisa showed her veteran presence and turned the match around and displayed great effort in doing so," stated Assistant Coach Jeff Hammond.
Dishkova dropped the first set to Alia Nour, 6-7, but rallied to win the final two sets by scores of, 6-4, 6-3. Dishkova's next opponent, Dasha Ivanova, defeated her first combatant in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1.
"Hristina was down 6-7, 1-4, and love 40 before she in traditional Mustang fashion fervently climbed back into it, winning it in 3 sets," exclaimed Hammond. "Fantastic job."
Anderson fell to Jessica Ho in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, in the first match of her young career. "Anna Kate now has her first college match under her belt," said Gyulai. "She kept her emotions in check on a tough day and never gave up. That type of attitude will pay dividends come the spring."
This weekend, SMU splits its team between the Colorado Invitational (Sept. 27-29) and the Amelia Island 10K Championships, which close Sept. 29.
