No. 51 SMU Edged By No. 35 TCU, 4-3

DALLAS (SMU) --- The No. 51 SMU women's tennis team took an early lead, but fell 4-3 to No. 35 TCU on Wednesday. The Mustangs earned two wins over ranked foes. In doubles, Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Aleksandra Malyarchikova upset the No. 47 duo 8-6. In singles, No. 77 Malyarchikova won in straight sets over No. 75 Olivia Smith 6-4, 6-4.
"We had our chances," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "We played with the lead the entire match, but couldn't close it out. Both teams put a fight, and TCU outlasted us."
The Mustangs won the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Bulgakova and Malyarchikova won at No. 1 doubles with their first win over a ranked pair this season. This was Malyarchikova's 74th career doubles win, which is sixth at SMU. Edyta Cieplucha and Yana Erkeeva won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. This marked Cieplucha's 70th doubles victory, which is eighth at SMU.
In singles, Malyarchikova had the biggest win as she improved to 4-3 against ranked opponents this year. She now has 83 career singles victories, which is eighth all-time for the Mustangs. Hristina Dishkova had the other win for the Mustangs at No. 5 singles.
The Mustangs are at No. 26 Rice on Saturday at 11 a.m.
