DALLAS (SMU) --- The No. 50 SMU women's tennis team edged No. 61 Columbia 4-3 on Thursday. After the Mustangs (10-5) won the doubles point, No. 111 Aleksandra Malyarchikova led off singles with an SMU win against No. 61 Nicole Bartnik.

"We played disciplined in difficult outdoor conditions," said head coach Kati Gyulai. "Our fundamentals were good in doubles which translated to a 1-0 lead. This is a great win for us over a very good team. Great fight from both programs."

SMU took the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Vaszilisza Bulgakova and Malyarchikova won 8-4 at the top spot and Edyta Cieplucha paired with Yana Erkeeva for an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles.

In singles, Malyarchikova scored the biggest upset for SMU; defeating No. 61 Bartnik 7-5, 7-6 (8-6). Malyarchikova is now 18-4 on the season and 3-1 against ranked opponents. Bulgakova dominated at No. 3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2. Hristina Dishkova then claimed the point for SMU at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph.

The Mustangs head to Las Vegas for a pair of matches this weekend. SMU faces UNLV on Saturday and Conference USA foe Marshall on Sunday.
