DALLAS (SMU) – Sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova notched her 10th victory of the season as she improved to 10-6 overall after defeating Sam Houston State senior Olivia Battye in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 in the No. 1 singles match as the SMU women’s tennis team defeated the Bearkats, 5-0 in Dallas on Saturday. This was the first match of a doubleheader as the Mustangs take on UTEP later today.
SMU (2-8) took the opening doubles point and then won at the No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 singles positions to secure the match victory over Sam Houston State (3-2).
In addition to Bulgakova in singles, sophomore Hristina Dishkova (13-10) won at the No. 2 singles position as she beat Bearkat senior Imke Jagau, 6-0, 6-0 while freshmen Dasha Sharapova (11-7) and Macie Elliott won at the No. 3 and 5 singles positions in straight sets as well.
In doubles, Dishkova and junior Holly Verner (6-1) defeated Sam Houston State senior Kayla Stevenson and Jagau, 8-6 in the No. 2 doubles match. In the No. 3 doubles match, sophomore Yana Erkeeva and Elliott (9-4) topped Bearkat sophomore Karen Martinez and freshman Isabella Costa, 8-3.
Following the UTEP match, SMU is back in action on Thurs., March 6 when the team plays host to American Athletic Conference foe Temple at 4 p.m. That match will be played at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas.
