DALLAS (SMU) - Sophomore Vaszilisza Bulgakova won the No. 1 singles match over Tatiana Larina, 4-6, 6-4, 15-13 despite the SMU women's tennis team falling to Northwestern State, 4-3, at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas. With the win, Bulgakova improved to 9-3 overall this season.
The loss dropped the Mustangs to 1-1 this spring.
In addition to Bulgakova, sophomore Hristina Dishkova defeated Natalya Krutova, 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 in the No. 4 singles match as she improved to her overall record to 10-6. In the No. 5 singles match, sophomore Yana Erkeeva beat Daniela Simonova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The victory improved her overall mark to 8-4.
In the No. 3 doubles match, freshman Macie Elliott and Erkeeva (6-1) defeated Amy Williams and Simonova, 6-1 as the Mustang duo won their second match in as many days together.
"They out competed us on our home court, so congratulations to Northwestern State," head coach Kati Gyulai said. "We look forward to getting better as a team going forward."
SMU is back in action on Saturday, Feb. 1 when it hosts No. 18 Texas Tech at 12:00 p.m. at the Northwood Country Club in Dallas.
