PROVIDENCE, R.I. (SMU/American) - The American Athletic Conference announced the 2014 women's preseason poll and honors on Monday.  The SMU women's soccer team was selected to finish fifth and senior forward Shelby Redman was named to the preseason all-conference team. 

The Mustangs finished eighth in the AAC in 2013 with a 3-5-1 conference record. 

Redman, a senior, was named to the preseason all-conference team as a forward.  The Austin, Texas, native was named Second Team All-AAC in 2013 after leading the Mustangs in goals with eight.  

Reigning conference champion UCF was picked to finish first with nine first place votes.  UConn, who received the only other first place vote, was selected as the runner-up.    

UCF sophomore Lena Petermann and UConn sophomore Rachel Hill were named Co-Preseason Offensive Players of the Year, while Diamond Simpson of Memphis was tabbed as the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.  UConn sophomore Emily Armstrong was named the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.

SMU heads to Nebraska on Friday, Aug. 22 for the regular season opener at 6 p.m. CT.  Conference play kicks off in late September when the Mustangs travel to Houston on Sept. 25.
