FRISCO, Texas (SMU) - With the beginning of its regular season just 15 days away, the SMU women's soccer team has reported for preseason camps in Frisco. This year marks the fourth straight that the program has begun its season preparation there.
The Mustangs are coming off a 2012 campaign that saw the squad finish 9-8-4, including advancing to the Conference USA semifinals before falling to eventual league champion UCF. SMU defeated a then-No. 8 UCF squad on Oct. 7, a victory that helped propel the Mustangs to a five-game unbeaten streak.
Eight starters return from last year's squad, including All-C-USA honorees Shelby Redman (tied for the team lead in goals with nine), Rikki Clarke and Courtney Smith (team leader in assists). The Mustangs (along with fellow former C-USA members Memphis, Houston and UCF) will play their first season in the American Athletic Conference in 2013. New league opponents include Connecticut, USF, Louisville, Memphis, Rutgers, Cincinnati and Temple.
SMU will be in Frisco until the team leaves for its exhibition contest at Missouri on Aug. 17. The Tigers visited the Hilltop in a tune-up match before last season, with the Mustangs winning 4-0. The Mustangs' regular season begins on Aug. 23 with a home match against the University of Louisiana at Monroe.
