DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU Mustangs women’s soccer program has announced its 2014 schedule, and the slate includes 10 home matches at Westcott Field.
“It's a challenging schedule,” SMU head coach Chris Petrucelli said. “It starts with quality teams immediately and continues into the tough American Conference season. We play good teams at home and away. We're all looking forward to competing against a number of top programs. Our team will be stretched. However, we have confidence in the work we've put in since last season and the changes that have been made within our team. We're extremely confident that we can compete on the highest level and this schedule will give us the opportunity to prove it.”
The Mustangs kick off the regular season at Nebraska on Friday, Aug. 22. Nebraska ended the 2013 campaign ranked 13th in the nation with a 19-4-1 record. SMU then plays at Kansas on Aug. 24 before coming home for its home opener against Texas Southern at Westcott Field on Aug. 29. SMU has won five straight home openers dating back to 2009.
SMU will play a total of four straight home matches from Aug. 29 through Sept. 7, hosting Missouri (Aug. 31), Oral Roberts (Sept. 5) and UTSA (Sept. 7) during that span. SMU will then travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to play Colorado State on Sept. 12 before coming back to the Metroplex to play at TCU on Sept. 19.
Gonzaga will come to Westcott Field on Sept. 21 before SMU plays its first American Athletic Conference game at Houston on Sept. 25. The Mustangs will then host their last non-conference foe BYU on Sept. 27 before heading into the bulk of the conference slate.
SMU will trek to Florida to play UCF, last year’s league champion, on Oct. 3, and USF on Oct. 5. The Mustangs will then host Temple (Oct. 9) and Connecticut (Oct. 12), then visit Cincinnati (Oct. 16) and East Carolina (Oct. 19), before playing both Tulsa (Oct. 23) and Memphis (Oct. 26) on the Hilltop to close the season.
