SMU Falls 1-0 To East Carolina In Overtime
Oct. 16, 2011
DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker in overtime to East Carolina this afternoon at Westcott Field. The loss drops SMU to 9-6-1 on the season and 5-2-1 in Conference USA, while ECU moves to 7-6-1 overall and 2-5-0 in conference.
After it was a struggle for both teams to find the back of the net all match, East Carolina capitalized on a long through ball and a two-on-one to score the game’s only goal with three seconds remaining in the first overtime. With an SMU defender closing at the edge of the 18-yard box, Rachel Wechsler made a short pass to the left to Amanda Malkiewicz who placed the ball just over a sliding Courtney Webb for the game-winner.
The match was essentially a deadlock with the Pirates edging the Mustangs 12-11 in shots and 5-4 in shots on goal, though SMU held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
SMU will look to rebound as the team heads to Colorado College on Oct. 21 to begin its three-match road trip to end the regular season. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CT at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs, Colo.
