DALLAS (SMU) - Sophomore forward Kim Peabody scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the SMU women's soccer team to a 4-0 win Friday night over visiting Sam Houston State at Westcott Field.

With the victory, the Mustangs improved to 4-2-1 on the season. The Bearkats slipped to 2-5-0.

"This was a good game for us - we played well," SMU head coach Brent Erwin said. "They played us very hard. They played 10 or 11 players back in their third of the field, trying to get us to play the ball into space, so they could counter us, but it didn't happen."

The Mustangs took the lead in the 18th minute when senior midfielder Kimber Bailey dribbled into the penalty box and tapped a short pass to Peabody, who knocked the ball in from about four yards out.

Peabody extended the SMU lead in the 37th minute from even closer range. Freshman forward Lauren Shepherd lifted a long free kick from 40 yards toward the far (right) post, where Peabody tapped it in from a yard out.

In the 41st minute, the Ponies scored on another set piece when sophomore midfielder Jennifer Raad lifted a free kick into the middle of the penalty box, where junior defender Carley Phillips rose above the SHSU defense to head in her first goal of the season, and the eighth of her career. Freshman forward Kristin Medeiros finished off the scoring in the 53rd minute when she collected a pass from Peabody and slipped it just inside the left goalpost.

The Mustangs were as dominant defensively as they were on the offensive end, allowing just three shots all night, and only one shot on goal. SMU also didn't allow a single corner kick all night. But Erwin said it was Peabody who set the tone for the Mustangs.

"Kim Peabody was fantastic tonight - I thought she was wonderful," Erwin said. "We created some great scoring chances tonight for several players, but she was just everywhere. That's the Kim Peabody we expect to see."

The Mustangs now enter the Conference USA portion of their schedule with road games next Friday and Sunday at Colorado College and UTEP, before returning home Oct. 12 to face Southern Miss.
